During 2018, the Open Philanthropy Project recommended a total of approximately $159,000 over two years in scholarship support to two artificial intelligence researchers. This is an estimate because of uncertainty around future year tuition costs and currency exchange rates. The funding is intended to be used for the students’ tuition, fees, living expenses, and travel during their respective degree programs, and is part of an overall effort to grow the field of technical AI safety by supporting value-aligned and qualified early-career researchers. Recipients include:

    • Dmitrii Krasheninnikov, master’s degree, University of Amsterdam
    • Michael Cohen, master’s degree, Australian National University

This discretionary support falls within our focus area of potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence.
