The Open Philanthropy Project recommended two grants totaling $120,000 to support the formation of a new organization —the National Family Defense Project, led by Lisa Sangoi and Erin Miles Cloud — via Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs.1 The organization will work on challenging the separation of children from their parents under current policies of the criminal justice and child welfare systems. We previously recommended a grant to support a report on the impacts of drug policy and criminalization on child welfare.

These grants are discretionary and fall within our focus area of criminal justice reform. One of these grants was made by a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization, to which we occasionally make funding recommendations.

  • 1. The National Family Defense Project later changed its name to Movement for Family Power.
