The Open Philanthropy Project contracted with David Manheim for $65,308 to perform a research and analysis project evaluating existential risk from infectious disease. David intends to conduct an initial literature review identifying major biological risks, followed by the development of an interview protocol to use with experts at relevant institutions (e.g. the Centers for Disease Control). David will then use this information to perform various analyses and submit his findings to us. David’s work may also lead to the eventual publication of white papers or journal articles.

David was identified through our Biosecurity Risk Assessment RFP. We decided to support the work because (1) we believe rigorous risk assessment focused on global catastrophic biological risks will help us and other potential actors better understand and respond to these risks and (2) we want to enable field growth by empowering talented early-career individuals interested in averting potential global catastrophic biological risks, which we see as an important and neglected issue.

This grant falls within our focus area of biosecurity and pandemic preparedness.

This project was supported through a contractor agreement. While we typically do not publish pages for contractor agreements, we occasionally opt to do so.
